Courses bringing knowledge and advocacy skills to prostate cancer patients around Europe
The Europa Uomo Academy, previously known as the Europa Uomo Summer School, is a training programme to help representatives from Europa Uomo member organisations gain knowledge of prostate cancer issues and become expert patient advocates. The training sessions are run by a high-level panel of prostate cancer experts and experienced patient advocates.
The next Europa Uomo Academy event will be an Expert Patient Summer School, providing an understanding of the science, treatment and experience of prostate cancer. It will be held in Brussels, Belgium on 31st August to 5th September 2025. Later in the year, Europa Uomo will organise its first “Winter School” providing training in patient advocacy.
Expert patient Summer School content
The 2025 training event will cover:
The basic science of cancer
The course will provide a foundation of basic medical science, providing updates and insights into how cancer comes about and grows into a problem. It will explain PSA measurement, and how different types of imaging, such as MRI and PSMA-PET-CT, work.
Prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment
The course will chart a path from newly diagnosed prostate cancer to bone metastasis, examining optional treatments according to evidence and EAU guidelines. There will be an emphasis on using the evidence to stimulate thinking about options and consequences. Any treatment option, and any question, can be discussed with the experts on hand. The course will cover:
- screening and diagnosis
- treatments of local and locally advanced prostate cancer
- side effects of treatment
- the use of tumour markers to monitor treatment
- metastasised prostate cancer
- protecting bone health
- focal therapies
- castration resistant cancer
- radioligand therapy
- end of life
Living with prostate cancer
Issues surrounding living with prostate cancer and the effects of its treatments will be explored, including the areas of psycho oncology and sexology.
Although the emphasis of the Academy is on training and learning, there will also be opportunities for relaxation. Participants will spend one afternoon in the European Quarter of the city and enjoy an evening in a Belgian restaurant.

Who can attend?
Each Europa Uomo member organisation can send TWO representatives free of charge. They must be able to participate actively to the training, which requires a working knowledge of English. Participants must be prostate cancer patients active in their own national organisation.
Participants are proposed by their national organisation but need to be accepted by the Europa Uomo’s Academy management.
The 2025 expert patient training has a limited capacity of 25 participants, so please put yourself forward as soon as possible.
The cost of the summer school will be met by Europa Uomo and includes travel (reasonable expenses) and hotel from Sunday to Friday. Personal extras need to be paid by the participants themselves.
Alongside our patient representatives, Europa Uomo will be welcoming some of its sponsors as observers.
