Prostate cancer patient organisations prepare for a big awareness push

Europa Uomo member organisations across Europe are kicking off activities to raise awareness of prostate cancer, as November/Movember begins.

In Cyprus, hundreds of participants of all ages joined a two-kilometre “Blue Route” walk along the Limassol seafront to raise awareness and promote prevention of prostate cancer (pictured). The event, organised by Europa Uomo Cyprus and forming part of the Lemesia Festival, followed a route along the Limassol seafront, and provided a symbolic journey of health and awareness. A five-kilometre run preceded the walk.

Throughout the event, the German Medical Institute offered free PSA tests while the symbolic shaving of men provided a gesture of solidarity towards those affected by prostate cancer.

Meanwhile, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of Europa Uomo’s newest member organisations has organised a programme of PSA testing and ultrasound testing of male employees in selected companies throughout the country.

“At the same time, with representatives of health associations from the public sector, we will promote the importance of prevention and screening in the fight against prostate cancer,” says Sead Sefić of the Prostate Cancer Association of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Another new Europa Uomo member organisation, the Croatian Society of Prostate Cancer Patients, will be organising three major events during November and December.  A high-level roundtable event to discuss the latest findings and challenges in prostate cancer early detection and treatment will be followed by a public health campaign in Zagreb, highlighting the importance of prostate cancer diagnosis. In December, the society will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a reception in Zagreb.

In Malta, Europa Uomo’s associate member the Malta Male Cancer Support Association, will be holding a conference on “Men and cancer: resilience and action” under the patronage of the President of Malta.

In the UK, the organisation Tackle is working with other charity partner to persuade the British government to introduce a national risk-based prostate cancer screening programme. A decision from the UK screening committee is expected in November.

And in Sweden and Norway, Europa Uomo organisations will once again be organising activities around the Mustaschkampen and Bartekampen campaigns held in November.
