It is with sincere sadness that we announce the passing of Hannu Tavio. Hannu was one of the small group of men involved in the creation of Europa Uomo between 2002 and 2004.

Early menopause raises family members' risk of prostate cancer

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism shows that in second-degree family members (grandparents, aunts/uncles, nieces/nephews, half-siblings, and grandchildren) of women who experience menopause at the age of 40, the risk of prostate cancer increased by 64% in first-degree relatives, 54% in second-degree relatives and 33% in third-degree relatives (great-grandparents, great-grandchildren and first cousins).

Precision therapy for metastatic prostate cancer improves survival

The ProBio Study has shown that men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer should be treated primarily with abiraterone/enzalutamide, which offer better treatment response and longer life expectancy than chemotherapy. However, the effect depends on the mutations of the tumour.

Oncopedia charts European contributions to oncology

The European School of Oncology (ESO) has launched the European Oncopedia project –  an online archive charting major European contributions in the field of oncology.

The Oncopedia is dedicated to documenting the rich history of Europe’s impact on cancer care, covering cutting-edge interventions, socio-cultural aspects, prevention and public health strategies. It includes biographies of key figures, video interviews, and descriptions of institutes and organizations that have significantly shaped the history of European oncology. The Oncopedia offers a comprehensive look at how these contributions came about and the difference they have made for patients.

OnHome Alliance aims to remove prescriptions inequality

The OnHOME Alliance, a partnership between patient organisations and healthcare associations, has the single objective of enabling patients throughout Europe to receive their prescription medicines online. Only 8 out of 27 EU Member States have allowed this choice for decades. The Alliance aims to remove such inequality so that all patients throughout the EU may have a safe and secure way of receiving the prescription medicines direct to their home or delivery address of their choice. The OnHOME Alliance is organising a launch event in Brussels, Belgium on 29th October.

Urology Week: 23-29 September

The European Association of Urology’s Urology Week 2024, held on 23rd-29th September, focuses on incontinence. By building on the EAU policy office’s Urge to Act campaign they aim to increase awareness of continence issues and break the taboo around talking about incontinence.

The EAU has made awareness posters which are available to download in a number of languages.

Change to clinical trials in the European Union

All ongoing clinical trials in the EU must be transitioned to the Clinical Trials Information System (CTIS) by 31st January 2025.

Information and documents on over 6000 trials are publicly available on the CTIS portal. New features have been introduced on the portal to make it easier to search for publicly available information on clinical trials in the European Union and European Economic Area.

EORTC Patient Days

On 30th and  31st October, the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) is holding a two-day virtual training course for cancer patients, caregivers and patient advocates to improve understanding of cancer research.
